Night Lake

When I went under  Night lake
I trusted
that the air
was where I left it
that you still lay sleeping
beyond the bank.

I couldn’t be safe
alone and naked
in the dark
before tonight.

Still, I went deeper
and my lucky soul swam
beyond the shallows—
that forest
 a solitude
I could not shake off.

But your warmth
I still craved
your calm surface
still tempting me
to dive in.
